Varithena has been the only cleared by the FDA foam treatment for incompetent great saphenous vein and visible varicosities.  It is indicated for extremely tortuous (twisted) veins which have been very difficult to treat even with endovenous ablation in form of laser or radiofrequency.  It is intended for intravenous injection using ultrasound guidance, administered either via direct injection or a cannula and may not require local anesthetic. The unique properties of its microfoam make it highly visible on Duplex Ultrasound and allow the foam to be massaged into the tortuous tributary of the diseased varicose vein branches.

Varithena improves the symptoms of superficial venous incompetence and the appearance of visible varicose veins and significantly minimize risk for distant foam embolization (PE) and deep vein thrombophlebitis (DVT). This treatment is virtually pain free and is suitable for patients with complicated problems, patients with skin changes around the ankle and patients who have multiple medical problems that would have prevented them from undergoing surgery.
